Course content

In recent years new channels for the dissemination of research knowledge have opened up, joining traditional channels like journal papers and conference presentations. These channels, which include interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, knowledge exchange (including technology transfer), and innovation and exploitation, extend and broaden the reach of academic research within and beyond academia in the public and private sectors.

At the same time, they raise important questions about how knowledge can be protected and leveraged, through various forms of Intellectual Property (IP), which provides controls on the use and exploitation of knowledge before, during and after a project, and determines the nature, scale and range of participation in collaborative research.

Programme

The first day will focus on IP and research opportunities and the second day will apply that knowledge to commercialisation opportunities.

Learning objectives

The Vitae Intellectual Property and commercialisation in research workshop enables participants to make informed choices about disseminating their research by providing knowledge on the various forms of IP and an action-based introduction to the skills required to navigate the new research dissemination environment.

By the end of the two-day programme, they will be able to:

  • Understand a range of forms of Intellectual Property Rights and how to find out more about the specific requirements in their own institution and/or jurisdiction
  • Recognise enterprise challenges and find innovative ideas to meet them
  • Develop an action plan for innovating enterprise opportunities
  • Understand the basic elements needed for a new business enterprise
  • Apply the concepts and practicalities of IP to their own work
